More businesses closed than opened in August, according to StatCan, for the first time since May 2020. A total of 43,111 businesses closed in August, while just 41,795 new ones opened. “In August, a majority of businesses that were previously under lockdown were able to function close to normal,” so that reopenings had already reached their peak, Jimmy Jean, chief economist at Desjardins Group, told The Globe and Mail.
