CertainTeed responds to tariff complaints

McADAM, N.B. — CertainTeed Gypsum Canada has responded to calls for a boycott of its drywall products after a complaint filed by the company with Canadian Border Services triggered a surge in tariffs on drywall imports in Western Canada. The Canadian International Trade Tribunal found evidence of dumping and imposed the tariff. This action is increasing drywall costs by as much as 60%. CertainTeed, the only company with drywall manufacturing in Western Canada, filed the complaint to bring attention to the fact that its competitors were dumping drywall in the Western market at prices below U.S. market.

In a statement, CertainTeed’s leadership said they are “disappointed and surprised at the recent call for boycotts of our drywall products.” The statement maintains that “dumping creates material injury to domestic manufacturers,” and that the company’s actions are “meant to stop this practice and bring a level playing field and fair competition to the Western Canadian marketplace.”
