Feds extend emergency benefit

OTTAWA — The Canada Emergency Response Benefit is getting a two-month encore, though the federal government is encouraging workers to return to the labour force where possible.

“The reality is that there are three million people out of work who are looking for work,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in his announcement, “and even as our economy is reopening, there are many, many more people out of work, willing to work, than there are jobs available.” Applicants will be required to sign an acknowledgement that the government is encouraging them to consult its job bank and seek work.

The benefit will continue to be available now until October 3.
