Home Depot nixes Black Friday in favour of fall deals

ATLANTA — Home Depot will not hold its usual Black Friday event this year, opting to offer seasonal discounts during November and December over a one-day surge in store traffic. The retailer published a statement on its website explaining that pandemic safety considerations influenced its decision to “reinvent” Black Friday. Deals will be available in-store and online, with mobile app users getting first crack at savings on select items in early November.

Home Depot’s move fits with a broader trend away from the bricks-and-mortar Black Friday experience. “Black Friday has definitely transitioned more into a digital affair in the past five years,” Neil Saunders, retail analyst and managing director at GlobalData Retail, told CNN. “The focal point is not that single day anymore. It’s an event spread out over several days.”
