Online commerce poses challenges for retailers

MONTREAL — A new poll commissioned by La Presse found that 33 percent of Quebecers believe retailers make more from online than in-store sales, while just 13 percent believe the opposite. Patrick Delisle, director of marketing at Canac, remarks that “big myths” about e-retail persist among the public. Canac shuttered its transactional website in the spring because it wasn’t profitable enough, even without the option of home delivery.

Other merchants see continuing value in the online channel, even if it is no cash cow. Margo Setlakwe Blouin, president of Silhouette Lingerie, says “we need it, in 2020, to do intelligent marketing,” adding that e-retail transactions can drive in-store traffic as well.
