Retail sales rise in February

OTTAWA — Retail sales increased 0.4% in February to $49.8 billion, according to the latest StatCan data. Higher sales at new car dealers and general merchandise stores were the main contributors to the gain. Sales were up in four of 11 sub-sectors, representing 47% of retail trade. Excluding sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers, retail sales were unchanged. Sales in building and garden supplies, seasonally adjusted, came to $3.9 billion, a 2.1% increase from the previous month and up a healthy 9.1% from February of last year.
