Sears Canada shutters last stores

TORONTO — This past weekend saw the final day of liquidation sales at the last Sears stores left standing in Canada. The closures marked the end of an era that began when the retailer entered Canada in 1953. In recent years, the chain had struggled to stay afloat in an increasingly online marketplace. It filed for creditor protection in June of last year, and began liquidation sales in the fall.

Retail analyst John Williams told the CBC that the company sealed its fate by focusing too much on real estate and neglecting its e-retail potential. “Sears Canada had every opportunity, with its [print] catalogue, to jump into the e-commerce world, and they flubbed it.”
