U.S. retail sales show surprise increase

U.S. retail sales in August edged up by an unexpected 0.3 percent. Excluding gasoline, sales were up 0.8 percent. Eight categories out of 13 benefited from increases. In a Bloomberg survey, economists on average projected a 0.1 percent decline. July’s data was revised downward to show a decrease of 0.4 percent.
