BURLINGTON, Ont. ― Ikea Canada announced this week it has phased out all single-use plastic straws, nine months ahead of the retailer’s global commitment to eliminate all single-use plastics from its product range and restaurants by January 1, 2020. “Plastic straws have become an important symbol in the global movement to drastically reduce plastic pollution in our oceans and waterways,” said Melissa Mirowski, Ikea Canada’s sustainability specialist, in a release. “Together with our co-workers and customers, we are proud to take this significant step to contribute to a world without waste.” The transition is part of Ikea’s People + Planet Positive strategy, which was introduced in June 2018 and outlines three main change drivers to help fulfil the Ikea vision: enabling healthy and sustainable living, becoming a climate-positive business and being fair and equal.
