OTTAWA ― Sales in the retail trade sector edged down 0.1% in August to $51.5 billion, according to the latest StatCan data. Sales were down in six sub-sectors, representing 51% of retail trade. After increasing 5% in June, sales edged down by 0.5% at building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers, the second consecutive monthly decrease. They nevertheless remained above the level observed in May. After removing the effects of price changes, retail sales in volume terms increased 0.2%.
