WASHINGTON — Sales of existing U.S. homes rose by 2.4 percent in August, according to the National Association of Realtors, hitting a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of six million units. Compared to last August, sales were up 10.5 percent. August’s sales pace was the highest since December 2006. The Northeast saw the strongest gains: 13.8 percent on a monthly basis. More modest increases were logged in the Midwest (+1.4 percent) and the South and West (+0.8 percent each).
