In memoriam: Alex Trebek

LOS ANGELES — Alex Trebek, who hosted the game show Jeopardy! for more than 35 years, has died at the age of 80 from pancreatic cancer. The Sudbury, Ont., native began his career at the CBC, working nights while still a student at the University of Ottawa. In 1973 he moved to the United States where he hosted a series of short-lived game shows on NBC and CBS.

When Trebek’s friend Art Fleming, the original Jeopardy! host, declined to return for its 1984 revival, Trebek took the job. He continued as host even after announcing his stage IV pancreatic cancer diagnosis in March of 2019, with his final episodes taped just days before his death. A dual Canadian-U.S. citizen since 1998, Trebek was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2017.
