STELLARTON, N.S. — With parts of Manitoba and Ontario introducing new lockdown measures, Sobeys parent Empire Co. is reinstating its wage premium for the grocer’s front-line workers in those regions.
Like many chains, Sobeys rolled out “hero pay” in response to the COVID-19 outbreak in early spring. It was among those companies that controversially withdrew the premium in June as a semi-normal retail routine resumed. Going forward, hourly workers in Winnipeg, Toronto and Peel Region will receive between $10 and $100 extra weekly pay, depending on the number of hours worked.
