Majority of homeowners plan renos this year: survey

As the pandemic reached the one-year mark, a survey by online contractor connection service HomeStars found that 74 percent of homeowners are planning home improvement projects this year.

The most popular projects are outdoor work, such as on landscaping or decks, followed by bathroom renovations. In terms of motivation, 50 percent mentioned wanting to age more comfortably at home while 29 percent pointed to an increased amount of time spent at home.

In regard to anticipated spend, small repairs (those under $1,000) and large jobs over $50,000 were the least popular. The top budget ranges were:

  • $1,000 – $10,000 for 46 per cent of respondents (essentially the cost of an annual family vacation)
  • $10,000 – $25,000 for 24 per cent of respondents
  • $25,000 – $50,000 among 11 per cent of respondents
