U.S. housing starts down as permits rise

U.S. housing starts dropped 4.1 percent to 1.63 million units in December, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Building permits for the month increased by 0.7 percent to 1.9 million. Economists expected 1.7 million starts and 1.76 million permits.
