Amazon to lay off more than 18,000 employees

Amazon will lay off more than 18,000 employees as part of its previously announced workforce cuts, CEO Andy Jassy said in a note to staff this week. It’s unclear at this point how many of these layoffs will be in Canada. CBC News reports that the layoffs will affect roughly six per cent of Amazon’s 300,000-strong corporate workforce.

Amazon has 1,468,000 workers globally, including warehouse workers. Meanwhile, Amazon workers are expressing their discontent through their unions. Employees at an Amazon warehouse in Coventry, in the English Midlands, are planning to walk off the job on Jan. 25. Many analysts have said that Amazon had over-hired during the pandemic and the company is adjusting to more normal revenue growth.
