MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Lowe’s will phase out the sale of plants and garden products containing neonicotinoid pesticides, which have been linked to the death of honeybees. The announcement comes just days after the European Academies Science Advisory Council released a study indicating that agricultural neonicotinoid use can harm a number of helpful insects and other organisms, including honeybees. Agricultural lobbyists contest the data, and Lowe’s acknowledges they are “inconclusive,” but that it is taking these steps “out of an abundance of caution.”
