MONTREAL and HAGERSVILLE, Ont. — Retailers are struggling to keep bird feed stocked amid a spike in demand. Ontario-based Armstrong Bird Food supplies chains such as Canadian Tire, RONA and Canac. Ingrid Smith, who heads up customer service at Armstrong, confirmed the shortage in a note to Quebec City’s Le Soleil.
“COVID is the probable cause, since people have again taken up pastimes while the usual places of entertainment are closed,” she wrote. At Canac, Marketing Director Patrick Delisle says the company has had to turn to U.S. suppliers as stocks dwindle in Canada. Even those suppliers are running low, however. “There is a shortage that is putting pressure on prices temporarily,” Delisle acknowledged.
