OTTAWA — The federal government announced last week it will extend the Canada Emergency Response Benefit by one more month. The program will now end on September 27, after which time it will segue into a revamped Employment Insurance plan. Canadians who are currently receiving CERB through Service Canada and who are eligible for EI will automatically roll over. Those who have been receiving CERB through the Canada Revenue Agency will need to apply through Service Canada for EI.
For Canadians who don’t qualify for EI, the government is introducing three additional programs. The Canada Recovery Benefit will provide $400 per week to self-employed workers unable to work. The Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit will offer $500 per week for up to two weeks to workers who are sick or in isolation. The Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit will provide $500 per week for up to 26 weeks per household for parents who cannot work because of child care or school closures.
