Cree band revives Quebec sawmill

The Cree First Nation of Waswanipi, through its forestry business Mishtuk Corp. is partnering with Chantiers Chibougamau to reopen a sawmill near its community. Bois d’œuvre cri occupies a former Domtar facility that closed in 2012. It currently has a capacity of 70,000 cubic metres per year, with the potential to increase to 120,000 cubic metres.

Mishtuk will own a 51 percent stake in the new venture with Chantiers Chibougamau holding the remainder. Backed by federal and provincial funding, the business aims to supply lumber to alleviate Waswanipi’s housing shortage.
