Empire reaches deal to buy Longo’s stake

Empire Co. Ltd., the Nova Scotia-based parent of Sobeys and IGA, has agreed to acquire a majority interest in the Longo’s chain of supermarkets. The deal includes Longo’s online Grocery Gateway business. Following the company’s acquisition of Farm Boy, the move will strengthen its position in southwestern Ontario, putting it ahead of Metro, Costco, and Walmart.

“The partnership with Longo’s accelerates Empire’s growing presence in Ontario and more specifically the Greater Toronto Area – Canada’s largest and fastest-growing grocery market,” said Empire CEO Michael Medline. Medline took over as CEO at the beginning of 2017, months after being ousted from the same role at Canadian Tire.
