Feds intervene as Montreal dockworkers strike

The federal government says it will table a bill to force dockworkers at the Port of Montreal back to work.

The workers, who have been without a contract since December 2018, began striking this morning. They have been on overtime since April 17 and have refused weekend shifts since April 18.

“This year, it will be worse for us if a strike occurs as renovation and construction activity in late April begins its most intense annual cycle,” Richard Darveau, president of Quebec industry group AQMAT, commented.
