Gananoque, Ont., hardware store’s owner turns 98

Charlie Donevan turned 98 last weekend. And his entire town, including the mayor, was invited to the celebration, which included an official reopening of Donevan’s Hardware.

But his store is even older than Charlie. It sits on the main street of Gananoque, a small town east of Kingston, Ont., alongside the St. Lawrence River. Donevan’s Hardware started as a general store in 1795 and was eventually purchased by James Donevan. Charlie is the grandson of the owner and has worked in the family business for over 90 years. Congratulations to Charlie on this milestone, and to the entire Donevan family!
