Greener Homes Grants stalled

Homeowners are flocking to apply for reimbursements for energy-efficient retrofits, and Ottawa is struggling to keep up, the Globe and Mail reports. The Canada Greener Homes Grant was introduced in May and received more than 32,000 applications within the first three days. That number has now surpassed 180,000. Of the more than 1,200 applicants who have completed the retrofit, evaluation, and application process, only 223 have been reimbursed.

William To applied for the grant on behalf of his parents. He says the family now regrets it. “Looking back, we wouldn’t have done it,” he told the Globe. “It’s not worth waiting this long and being out of pocket that much.”

A spokesperson for Natural Resources Canada said the department is “exploring all options to ramp up this program, train more energy auditors and ensure that grants are delivered in a timely manner.”
