HBC challenges Ontario lockdown rules

TORONTO — Hudson’s Bay Co. has asked an Ontario court to review the province’s closure of non-essential retailers in Toronto and Peel Region. In a filing, Canada’s oldest company argued the province’s data show shoppers don’t contribute appreciably to the transmission and cited Premier Doug Ford’s own admission that the regulations are “100 percent … not fair.”

HBC was among some 50 retailers to sign an open letter criticizing the province for pushing large numbers of customers to big boxes. It initially kept its Queen’s Street flagship in Toronto open the first day of lockdown, since its Pusateri’s food hall sells groceries, but closed it by day’s end amid public backlash.
