How close is Canada to a hiring boom?

With pandemic-related restrictions gradually being eased, businesses are hoping for customers will make a dash to return. When it comes to hiring, though, some voices are more cautious.

“I believe we are going to see a boomerang in spending,” Doug Porter, chief economist at BMO Financial Group, told CBC News. “But I’m skeptical whether we’re going to see that boomerang in employment.”

He cited ongoing restrictions in many parts of the country, as well as the situation in the U.S. Hiring is still a struggle for many businesses there, despite the more advanced state of reopening.

Others are more optimistic. “As restrictions gradually ease in June, with vaccination objectives far ahead of expectations, the floodgates could open with students and furloughed workers rushing back to work,” National Bank of Canada’s Kyle Dahms and Alexandra Ducharme wrote in a report this month.
