In memoriam: Sidney Poitier

Sir Sidney Poitier died last week at the age of 94. The Bahamian-American actor’s role in Lilies of the Field earned him an Oscar for Best Actor in 1964, the first awarded to a Black man. Other roles included A Raisin in the Sun; To Sir, With Love; and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. In the 1970s, he began to focus on directing but returned in front of the camera in the late 1980s.

In addition to his Oscar nod, Poitier was recognized with two Golden Globes, a BAFTA Film Award, an Honorary Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a knighthood in the Order of the British Empire.
