Retail sales declined 2.1 percent to $53.8 billion in May, according to the latest StatCan data. The largest decline was at building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers, where sales fell 11.3 percent. During the month of May, many retailers continued to face closures due to the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sales decreased in eight of 11 subsectors, representing 65.6 percent of retail trade.
