Measuring gross margin like this is the “kiss of death”: former Home Depot VP

Jim Inglis, former VP of merchandising for Home Depot, will give two presentations at the Hardlines Conference in Whistler, B.C., Oct. 17 to 18. His book, Breakthrough Retailing, contains many pearls of wisdom. These two sentences should give the entire industry food for thought:

“Some consultants and professors will encourage retailers to use gross margin return on retail square footage instead of GMROI as a measure of productivity. This is the kiss of death for most stores in general, and home centres in particular.”

(The 27th Annual Hardlines Conference will be held at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler resort Oct. 17 and 18, 2023. Register here!)
