New U.S. home sales beat expectations

Sales of new U.S. single-family homes rose by 1.5 percent in August to an annualized rate of 740,000 units. That pace, reported last week by the U.S. Commerce Department, was the highest in four months. It exceeded the median rate of 715,000 units projected by economists in a Bloomberg survey.
