The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy and Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy are scheduled to end this Saturday, Oct. 23. The Liberals campaigned on a promise to extend the wage subsidy in some sectors through March. Cabinet has the authority to extend supports to Nov. 20, and finance minister Chrystia Freeland has already hinted that more broad-based extensions could be in the works.
According to data from the federal government, the wage subsidy has paid $93.4 billion to 4.4 million applicants. Meanwhile, 1.7 million applicants have benefited from a combined $6.5 billion in rent subsidies.
