Retail sales edge down in July

Retail sales fell 0.6 percent to $55.8 billion in July, StatCan reports, the third decrease in four months. The decline was primarily driven by lower sales at building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers, which were down 7.3 percent, and food and beverage stores. Sales decreased in five of 11 subsectors, representing 38.7 percent of retail trade.
