Retail sales up in April

Retail sales increased 1.1 percent to $65.9 billion in April, according to new StatCan data. Core retail sales for the month rose by 1.5 percent, their fifth consecutive monthly increase. The gain was led by a 3.3 percent spike at general merchandise retailers. In LBM and garden categories, sales were up 0.7 percent compared to March.
