The announcement late last month of Natural Resources Canada’s Canada Greener Homes Grant generated enough buzz to crash its website, but concerns remain about the program’s parameters.
“There’s a couple of challenges with this program,” Tom-Pierre Frappé-Sénéclauze, the Pembina Institute’s director of buildings and urban solutions, told CBC News. Homeowners must make a considerable up-front investment before they see any reimbursements, including paying for two energy audits. According to the institute, those costs are likely to exceed the $5,600 maximum value of the grant for many homeowners. “This is not free money,” said Frappé-Sénéclauze.
