Yelp has named Vancouver’s Northern Cafe the best place to eat in Canada. It’s an impressive achievement for any restaurant, let alone a diner on the site of a hardware store and lumber yard. Northern Building Supply has been in business for more than 60 years.
Founder Bert Thomas opened the diner so that workers wouldn’t have to go off-site for their meal breaks. The Thomas family still owns and operates the store. Jimmy and Connie Mah took over the café in 2008, serving Chinese specialties alongside western diner fare. Their sons Raymond, a professional chef, and Richard work with them.
“Being a family-owned, small, little restaurant here in the middle of nowhere, it definitely means a lot to be ranked number one in Canada,” Raymond told CBC News.
