Throwback Thursday: The northernmost hardware store in Canada

Throwback Thursday is a regular weekly feature in which we dip into the archives of the Hardlines Weekly Report.

In our issue of 25 years ago, Jan. 13, 2000, we looked at Canada’s northernmost hardware store. The general manager of Kitikmeot Supplies, Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, said his store was it. The town in the High Arctic is known as the business centre for the Kitikmeot region of the territory. Cambridge Bay is 1,800 km north of Edmonton. It had a population of 1,760 according to the 2021 census. Winter months, we reported, are marked by 24-hour darkness and temperatures as low as -60° C. Most products come in by air freight, roughly $3 a pound back in 2000.
