The (U.S.) National Association of Home Builders is appealing to the Biden administration for an end to the tariffs imposed on Canadian lumber in defiance of WTO rules.
“The anti-dumping and countervailing duties currently in place on imported softwood lumber from Canada are aggravating already high lumber prices,” NAHB chair John Fowke wrote in a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai. “A resolution to the U.S.-Canada softwood lumber dispute would help ease market concerns for builders and consumers alike.”
The most recent round of tariffs was introduced in 2017, but rates were cut by more than half late last year. They currently amount to about nine percent of the value of the majority of softwood lumber exported from Canada to the U.S.
