U.S. home resales log surprise gains

Sales of existing U.S. homes rose unexpectedly in January to a one-year high, according to data from the National Association of Realtors. Closing transactions grew 6.7 percent from December to an annualized 6.5 million. The number of homes on the market meanwhile fell 2.3 percent to a record low of 860,000.
