U.S. retail sales increased by 0.5 percent in March, largely on the strength of gasoline purchases. Excluding gasoline, sales edged down by 0.3 percent. The increase was almost in line with analyst estimates of a 0.6 percent gain. February’s gain was revised upward to 0.8 percent.
