U.S. retail sales growth falls short of forecasts

WASHINGTON — U.S. retail sales in August edged up by 0.6 percent, compared to a Bloomberg survey estimate of one percent. Meanwhile, July’s sales increase was revised down to 0.9 percent. Nine out of 13 retail categories logged gains, led by restaurants, clothing and furniture. Sales of building materials and garden equipment rose by two percent.
