TORONTO — Wal-Mart Canada has confirmed the layoffs of 750 employees, a figure it says amounts to less than 1% of its staff, as the company moves to restructure its management, according to the Canadian Press. As part of that process, Wal-Mart Canada says 1,300 associates were promoted to more senior positions and 200 store managers added. One manager affected by the layoffs suggested to HARDLINES that allowing for internal movement, the effective total number of terminations is closer to 950, with an influx of front-line associates filling the void created by the shrink in management. Wal-Mart Canada has more than tripled in size since it began two decades ago with 122 former Woolco stores.
