BENTONVILLE, Ark. ― Walmart’s voluntary minimum-wage hike is fostering resentment among more senior workers who won’t be getting a raise. Walmart employees starting out as of April have been earning to $9, to reach at least $10 next February. More experienced staff, meanwhile, do not benefit from the increase, which is “pitting people against each other” as one such employee, Charmaine Givens-Thomas, told Bloomberg Business. Adding to ill-feeling is the suspicion that hours and annual raises are being cut to pay for the increase.
