BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart will invest $1 billion in some 60,000 new hires to cope with the holiday rush. The number approximately matches the number of seasonal hires last year, an increase from 55,000 in 2013. The company also plans to hire department managers at 3,500 stores. Current employees will have first crack at additional hours before new hires are made. Walmart raised its minimum wage for starting employees to $9 earlier in the year.
