Walmart turns to driverless trucks

Walmart said this week it has paired up with Silicon Valley startup Gatik to fulfil online grocery orders using driverless trucks. Since August, the companies have been operating a pair of autonomous box trucks on a seven-mile loop for 12 hours daily.

Gatik’s vehicles are loaded with product from a Walmart warehouse known as a “dark store” and then sent to a Walmart Neighborhood Market in the retail giant’s hometown of Bentonville, Ark. The Arkansas State Highway Commission approved the project in December 2020.
