Building permits rise again in January

OTTAWA — Canadian municipalities issued $8.4 billion in building permits in January, StatCan reports, up 5.6% following a 2.5% rise in December. The value of permits for three components rose, while permits declined by 18.6% for industrial buildings and 1.3% for single-family dwellings. The January increase was largely due to higher construction intentions for multi-family dwellings in Ontario. Toronto led the 16 census metropolitan areas out of 36 that reported gains.
