FERNIE, B.C. — Two local community groups will host a public meeting today to mobilize public support for logging restrictions, their concerns sparked by Canwel operations on an Elk Valley slope. Wildsight and the Fernie Trails Alliance are calling on the provincial government to increase oversight of private logging, which operates under a different set of rules than the public lands, which constitute 95% of B.C. timber. The property in question, said Wildsight coordinator Randal Macnair, “is a steep slope, it’s been completely denuded and there’s lots of potential problems with that in the short term and the long term.” (Photo: Eddie Petryshen)
