Permits up sharply, starts down

OTTAWA — The total value of building permits in March rose 11.6% from a month earlier to $6.9 billion, according to StatCan. This was the first increase in three months. In the residential sector, the value of permits rose 6.6% to $4.4 billion in March. The value of non-residential building permits rose 22.1% to $2.4 billion in March.

Meanwhile, CMHC reports that urban housing starts for April decreased by 6.6% seasonally adjusted, with multiple urban starts down by 14.2% and single-detached urban starts up by 11.4%.
