New owners for Charlottetown Home Hardware

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Callbecks Ltd, which owns a Home Hardware Building Centre in Prince Edward Island’s second-largest municipality, is expanding into the Charlottetown market. Its newly announced acquisition of Charlottetown Home Hardware is a joint venture with Charlottetown’s Metro Home Building Centre. Equity in the store will be split evenly between Callbecks, which is owned by the MacDonald family, and the Smith family of Metro, with Callbecks managing day-to-day operations.

“It’s a very well-run store; it’s got a very good reputation. It’s a family business, similar to ours, so it’s nice to be able to keep it family-owned and operated on P.E.I.,” Callbecks GM Duane MacDonald told the Summerside Journal Pioneer. “There’s an economy of scale to it too: it helps us out with our purchasing so we can pass on savings to our customers with our better buying power.”

Charlottetown Home Hardware had been owned by the Johnson and Wong families since its establishment nearly 50 years ago.
