STELLARTON, N.S. — Sobeys is getting ready to eliminate 1,300 jobs following its acquisition of Safeway Canada, according to Report on Business. The move is part of a bid to streamline operations and cut costs which will also see the company shutter three distribution centres. At the same time, it will also open a new one and expand one more in the next two years, announced Marc Poulin, CEO of Sobeys’ parent company Empire. The shakeup contributed to Empire reporting a $103 million charge in the most recent quarter.
