Throwback Thursday: 10 years ago, retailers stepped up to donate to Alberta flood relief

The nationwide forest fires are the environmental story of 2023. But 10 years ago, southern Alberta suffered devastating floods that caused the industry to rally around.

In our July 1, 2013, Hardlines newsletter, we ran the headline “Retailers step up for Alberta flood victims.” The story summarized some of the big retailers donating in support of relief efforts. Sears Canada had launched a fundraising campaign. The Home Depot Canada donated $125,000 to the Canadian Red Cross. The Hudson’s Bay Company donated $50,000 and offered customers the opportunity to divert points from their HBC Rewards Cards to the Red Cross. Target, “Canada’s newest retailer,” donated $50,000.
